Hey Jade! Great to have you here for our first Monthly Artist Feature for Dash Music. We're really excited to have to you here, how are you doing?
Hey, Honestly thanks for having me, it’s very exciting, I am doing really good, thank you, moving to Dubai so far has been a great idea. It's been quite a busy time working on some great new projects.
Ah thanks great to hear, With it being Ramadan now, and entertainment easing up a bit how will you be spending your time?
Main focus for me is complete my first year studies and take some time to increase my repertoire. I’m singing Jazz twice weekly at Atlantis and looking forward to the new season starting.
Wow, How do you find the time! So if it's Ok, lets move into some Q&As.
Why am I nervous haha, ok, let's do this.
Q So Jade, Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?
Before I started singing I had a 12 year dance career. No matter what I’m doing with my life my first love will always be dance. I started class around age 2, and have been training in some manner since then.
I also run a production show company called Cabaret Femme Fatale.
www.cabaretfemmefatale.com producing shows for corporate events in the uk and hotels in Europe. I’m actually working on an event for June in the UK as we speak.
I’m currently one year into a three year psychology and counselling degree so that keeps me busy.
Plus lots of time working on my fitness, and of course my suntan!
Q What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?
I love the performance, the feelings and the atmosphere. My favourite moments are when some sort of emotion overcomes you.
Maybe it’s the lyrics or the production team coming together and blowing people out of the water. Of course when I see people enjoying the shows, that just feeds the fire and makes me just keep on going.
Q Who's your ideal musician to collaborate with and why?
I have worked with quite a few different people, many with their own quirks, but when I work with someone with the same passion, high quality, and experience, it brings the best out of all of us.
Q Describe your favorite venue for performing?
For me it's just important to work with a venue with are team players, have a good sound equipment, strong artistic creators and people who care for the details and vibe.
Q What do you like most about playing music?
Being able to get lost in the emotion, and allow personal flares to shine through depending on the vibe or mood.
Q What strengths do you have that you believe make you a great musician?
In this industry, you really need to be resilient, it can really be up and down. I think most musicians here in Dubai have experienced getting cancelled, harsh feedback and having changes last minute thrown at you. You just need to pick yourself up and shine bright.
Talent is important of course but being someone people want to work with is most important to me.
Q Describe your favorite and least favorite part about being a musician.
My favourite part is performing makes me feel alive, I love it, and when I perform I really feel like I am in my element, I can only compare it to an athlete and the pump they feel when then compete.
My least favourite part is when you get harsh critiques and nastiness, and that good old question ‘when are you going to get a real job?’
Q Tell me about your favorite performance in your career.
That would have to be when I was a backing singer for Leroy Gomez around Italy. The crowd was massive and the energy was awesome. I even gave my first (and only) autograph hahah.
Q Which qualities do you think make a great musician?
I think you have to have the ability to listen and learn from others. We are always a student and there is always things to learn.
Q Do you have a process for dealing with performance anxiety?
The same as any anxiety, stay connected to the present moment and breathe. I go really quiet before performing, I guess like a grounding ritual.
Q How would you handle traveling and being away from your home for an extended time period while you were on tour?
Well, I’ve had a gypsy soul for a long time so travelling non-stop was excellent. But now I must say it’s really nice being able to unpack a suitcase and have nights in with my cats.
Q What would you do if your audience looked tired or bored during your performance?
I would absolutely call them out on it, but in a light hearted way. I would probably ask them down the microphone to share with the audience what they are looking at. I have a very interactive, no personal space manner to my hosting, so…. Watch out.
Q What would you do if you made a mistake during a performance?
I always ask the audience to join in. If I forget the words there is always a ‘woo’ ‘come on let me hear you’ ‘woohoo’ ‘you know this one’ that comes out.
Mistakes happen, especially when you are reacting to the crowd things distract you, tracks mess up, volumes go crazy. Most important thing is how you get back on track.
Q What’s an average day like for you?
8:30 Wake up, feed the cats, clutch the coffee, catch up with the world and meditate.
11:30 Something fitness based.
1:30pm Vocal practice
4:30pm Touch in with my UK team for events, emails or uni.
6:30pm Get ready for a gig
8:00pm Showtime
11:30pm Take all my make up off asap and give the cats lots of attention. My male cat is super needy and meows at you non stop until you give him love, I guess he is like most men.
Great! Thanks Jade for coming in, it's been great having you here, getting interrogated.
