Hey Lauren! Great to have you here for our November Monthly Artist Feature for Dash Music. We're really excited to have to you here, how are you doing?
Hey! im doing great, thanks for having me on! in the middle of a very busy events season, so cant complain
Busy is good! Hows the Events season going so far?
Busy is good, and the more the better! loving doing a variety of gigs so far and plenty more coming up over the holliday season. All very exciting!
Wow, Sounds awesome! So are you ready for some Quick fire Q&As?
Absolutely, let's do it.
Q What strengths do you have that you believe make you a great musician?
I am a good team player when it comes to working with a band or a group or a company or a client or a business. I’m calm and relaxed and laid back. It’s always a good and fun time, and I always enjoy being on stage and doing what I love, which is super important in our industry.
Q What made you want to become a singer?
I always sang, danced and choreographed routines in my bedroom when I was younger. I then went to a theatre school and did all my musical theatre, dance and drama exams which is where i really got into the swing of things and decided it was something i wanted to do full time even though at that time i wasnt sure what that would look like. It wasn’t until I was older that I started to get singing solo in shows and my first singing contract was when I was 20, which i absolutely loved, and fuelled me to carry on and go for more and more gigs.
Q Which instruments did you play in high school?
Yno, I scraped passes in my grade 2 flute. I wished I tried harder now and concentrated a lot more so that I could play an instrument properly ha! But singing has always been my passion, be great to have an instrument to go along side it though!
Q Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of music?
All art, music and socialising based! I love to meeting my friends, watching live music and generally having a good time! who doesn't? ha!
Q Do you have any weaknesses that you're actively working to improve on?
Yes! I actively try not to compare myself to others and what/how much they are doing. I get into my own head a lot! I’m very self critical and pick apart bits of my performance every time. I think its a very common thing for all artists to do, and it can be a really useful tool within limits to help drive you to get better at your craft, but you just have to remember to let it drive you, not discourage you, that's the balance!
Q What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?
It’s moving and beautiful. It can transport you to so many different places and make you feel so many different emotions. It’s moving and beautiful. It can transport you to so many different places and make you feel so many different emotions.
Q Describe your favorite and least favorite part about being a musician.
Working with people and … working with people haha!
Q What do you like most about playing music?
Entertaining people and making them feel what you’re feeling. Making them feel a part of our musical experience. Its great to get paid for something you love doing aswell.
Q
What inspired you to start playing and making music?
Growing up there was always music being played in the house from all types of different genres. My mum and dad love to sing as does my brother and he’s a phenomenally, natural talent of a musician. It’s in our blood and genes to entertain in some way, shape or form!
Q Describe your creative process when you write new music.
I write down a lot of lyrics. Randomly day to day. And then because I can only bash out a few chords that makes me quite limited but sometimes less is more ha!
Q Who's your ideal musician to collaborate with and why?
I like a whole range of artists but if i had to narrow it down, I'd have to say Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. They’re amazing story tellers and poets.
Q What's the best piece of advice another musician ever gave you?
To listen. Listen to the music! Sounds simple and obvious but there was a time when I first started performing with live bands and I used to let me insecurities and panic take over and I’d just pick my own key to sing in especially if I was trying to pitch a harmony or an intro haha it was tragic but amusing at times! But I wasn’t listening or focusing because I was so bothered about getting it wrong.
Q Are there any musicians who inspire you? What qualities do you admire about them?
I’m in complete awe of all the musicians and performers and talents in Dubai at the moment. There’s such a diverse range of singers, dancers, acts, bands, entertainment. I’ll happily work with whoever will have me haha
Q Which skills have you gained that help you perform effectively as a musician?
Be yourself. Be true. Be pure. The audience know if you’re being insincere and faking it per-say and I find that they appreciate it more when they see you for who you are whilst you’re performing. There’s beauty in a little vulnerability here and there.
Q How would you handle traveling and being away from your home for an extended time period while you were on tour?
It's what I’ve always wanted to do so I’m very lucky. It’s a lot easier these days with technology and whatsapp to keep in touch etc and I make sure that I go back home and visit every now and then when I can. Home is where the heart is. I have a beautiful family around the world and here in Dubai.
Q Is there another musician you've mentored or trained? Describe what you've done to help them.
I’ve choreographed a lot of UK tours and shows with children as young as 3 years old up to adults. Performance wise, I’ve had a lot of people reach out to me and ask for help or questions from subjects such as obtaining contracts/contacts/gigs to what to wear and where to shop and to getting over nerves and to performing for hours dancing around on stage in heels etc I hope I’ve helped a few people ha
